Hello!! My name is Rebecca Roberts.  I am a 20 year old freestyle (slopestyle) skier from Lake Tahoe.  I am currently  competing on a professional level while working toward earning my Bachelors degree at Sierra Nevada College.

My Why

My goal is to make it to the 2014 Sochi Olympics, and X-games.  This will require a lot of hard work, and I will need support along the way. Nonetheless, I am up for the challenge.  Representing the United States in the Olympics has been a life-long dream for me, and with women's freeskiing being held for the first time in the 2014 Sochi Olympics, I truly believe that the time is now. By achieving this goal, I will be providing inspiration to other young skiers by showing them that through hard work and determination, you can accomplish anything you set your mind toward.

 My story

My parents taught me how to ski when I was 3 years old.  I picked up on the sport quickly, and fell in love with skiing at a young age. Following in my brother's footsteps, I joined the mogul team at age 11. Competing in moguls was great for me, as I was named the Junior Olympic Champion for my age group each year that I competed.  Although I loved moguls, by age 15 I found myself getting more into park skiing. Three years later, I started competing at a national level, represeting the Sierra Nevada College Freestyle Ski Team. Since then, I have been ranked Number One in collegiate freestyle skiing in the U.S. This winter I have been invited to attend the World University Games in Italy in December.  My plan was to attend this competition until I was recently contacted by the U.S. Freesyle ski team coach. He informed me that I have been selected to compete in the first three 2014 Olympic Qualifying World Cups!

What I will need

As I work with total determination toward my goal this year, I will need outside support from friends and family. My Goal is to raise $6,000. An estimated breakdown of costs and where the money will be going is as follows: travel costs will be $1,600, which will include airplane tickets as well car travel; lodging and food will be $2,100; lift tickets will cost $1,600; and entry fees for the competitions will add up to be $700.  This is the cost of the eight competitions that I am signed up for as of now. My schedule is as follows:

  • Breckenridge, CO Winter Dew Tour Olympic Qualifier Dec 12-15
  • Copper, CO Grand Prix Olympic Qualifier Dec 16-2
  • Northstar, CA Grand Prix Olympic Qualifier Jan 6
  • Northface PPOS Whistler, BC Jan 13
  • Seven Springs, PA Revolution Tour Feb 7
  • Northface PPOS Stratton VT Feb 13
  • Boreal, CA Revolution Tour Feb 27
  • Sun Valley, ID Revolution Tour Mar 5

My schedule is subject to change as the year goes on. I am invited to 3 of the 4 Olympic Qualifying World Cups, and depending on my results in those I will be invited to the final World Cup held in Park City, Utah.  After the Park City event they will determine the US team that will attend the 2014 Sochi Olympics.  All events from above will go toward earning a spot at both the Colorado X-Games, and Euro X-Games.

Successes:

Northstar at Tahoe: North Face PPOS 2013 2nd Place Womens slopestyle
Alpine Meadows: TRAINS 2013 1st place overall Team (donated $2000 to the Shane McKonkey Foundation)
Sun Valley ID USCSA Nationals 1st Place Womens Slopestyle
Northstar at Tahoe: North Face PPOS 2012 4th Place Women’s Slopestyle

Boreal Mtn Armada SOS 2013 1st Place

My Team

I would most importantly like to thank my parents for all the support over the years, and my brother and sister for being the best role models I could ask for! I would also like to thank Heavenly Ski Foundation, and my coach growing up, Jere Crawford. Thank you Sierra Nevada College ski team, and coach, Jon Cherry, you have been great. And all of the other coaches/ friends that I have been able to ski with and look up to over the years.  Thank you to my sponsors: GoPro, Smith Optics, and Liberty Skis for setting me up this winter with some awesome gear!
