Welcome to My Rally Campaign
You might know me as Carly the semi-nomadic, semi-pro athlete. The semi-nomadic part means that during the training season I'm based part-time on the east coast and part-time on the west coast, during race season I follow the Super Tour (Domestic Pro) Circuit, and in the window of time between the two I travel to all the places I don't manage to cover while training and racing! The semi-pro part means...well, see blow, "Why I'm Raising Funds."
Why I'm Raising Funds
Semi-pro means I have some personal sponsorships that help me cover the cost of racing, (and living), but I fund the rest myself. My fundraising goal of $2000 represents about a third of the projected cost of race season. I will be traveling and racing full time from the end of November through the beginning of March. Expenses include travel and lodging, skis and wax and paying my wax technicians, and liscences and entry fees. I'm able to keep the cost as low as I do through the generous support I receive from the individuals and companies listed below, and on my website.
How I Got Here
The path I'm on isn't the obvious one... I've very much made it up as I've gone along. It has involved moving a half dozen times, starting my own business, writing my own training plans, waxing my own skis, traveling alone, and living on a super strict shoestring budget. I've never had so much fun with ski racing in my life.
I'm on a mission to inspire others to live the unconventional life of their dreams! It really is possible with enough creativity and a refusal to settle. And it's so worth it. I offer endurance coaching and lifestyle design consultation through my website, www.enduranceefficacy.com.
Last year was an experiment, my first winter traveling full-time to race with professional athletes. It came with a number of challenges, like dealing with imposter syndrome at U.S. Nationals, coping with overtraining, season-ending injuries (and healing them), and of course, minor existential crises. I'd like to think I came out of the season smarter than I went in to it. I have some lofty results-oriented goals this year, and I'm proud of the commitment I've made to ski racing. It has involved some changes, and yes, some sacrifices, but that's what we do: put all our eggs in one basket in the pursuit of our goals, in an effort to answer the question, what am I capable of? And hopefully have a load of fun.
Team! Mine is, as you might expect, unconventional. For the third year in a row I opted to race independently, but that doesn't mean I'm not getting loads of help. I'd like to thank Zach and Amy Caldwell and Caldwell Sport for the coaching, superb ski service, and for supplying me with al the ski accerssories (wax, tools, etc) I could possibly want. Thanks to Madshus for the rocket-booster skis (and poles, and boots, and clothes.) SunButter Sunflower Seed Butter helps me handle my food allergies on the go with their delicous, healthy, and totally allergy-friendly snacks. Dan Plauche Massage in Bend, OR keeps my body functioning. And the Lane family of Bend makes this all possible by hosting me for the months I spend on the west coast. Want to buy just about anything you could need for ski racing, some SunButter, or book a massage? Find all the links here.
My team would not be complete without mention of one other character, my dad Mike. He was my first coach, and is still my first go-to for answers to tricky physiology questions, to share my successes, and when I need some good old tough-love support.
