UPDATE! - Dec. 29
I'm excited to announce that I've been chosen to participate in a support program through the World Cup Dreams Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit. Beginning Dec. 29, 2014, all contributions to my campaign will be through World Cup Dreams and will be eligible as tax deductible.
Welcome to My Rally
My name is Wiley Maple. I am in my 6th season training and competing with the US Ski Team. This year, I am a member of the US Ski Team’s Europa Cup Speed Team competing in World, Europa and NorAm Cup events with a goal of securing a spot on this season’s World Championship team.
I was J2 National Champion in 2007, Nor Am DH Champion in 2011 and Val D’Isere Europa DH champion in 2013. I sat out the 2014 season with a knee injury. I have already come back strong this season - at the fisrt World Cup race of the year in Lake Louise, Canada, I started 56th and finished 22nd, securing a spot on the World Cup circuit through the rest of the season.
Why I am Rallying
Although I have reached an internationally high level, ski racing will cost me $25,000 through US Ski Team requirements. Further travel and training costs will add an additional $15,000. My sponsors Oakley, Atomic, Briko and Strafe provide all the equipment I need, but my training and travel costs must be funded by a combination of benefits, grants and individual contributions.
How I Got Here
I was on skis almost before I could walk. Skiing is in my blood, it’s what my family does. My grandparents met at the Colombia Ice Field in the Canadian Rockies. Falling in love with each other and the sport of skiing, they eventually moved to Aspen, Colorado to raise their family on snow. My father, aunt and uncle all ski raced with the Aspen Valley Ski & Snowboard Club (AVSC) and my father went on to compete on two NCAA championship teams at the University of Colorado. My entire family is still fully involved with skiing and ski racing. Every year hordes of Maples volunteer for every race held in Aspen.
As a kid, I played every sport available to me, but I ultimately fell completely in love with the mountains and the sport that suits them best, skiing. Growing up with a great group of friends and a supportive family, I skied almost everyday, first lift until last. Loving the challenge of competition, I eventually started ski racing for AVSC and began to excel as a teenager, leading Aspen High School to a state championship, winning the J2 National Championships and being named to the US Ski Team’s Development team before graduating high school in 2008.
Since then, I have made huge strides toward my goal of one day becoming the best in the world. Unfortunately, I have had a career plagued with injuries - it seems I have rarely gone more than 6 months without a major surgery. But after each set back, I have struggled and climbed my way back to the top, stronger and smarter than ever. Last season, I was on track to compete for a spot on the Sochi Olympic team. Unfortunately my season was cut short with a season ending knee injury in November. With skiing off the table, I refused to be stagnant and opted to keep moving forward by spending my winter at Westminster College in Salt Lake City. It was an excellent experience to detach from skiing and completely immerse myself in my studies.
Why This Matters
Although college was fun and rewarding, I am back, and after a year's hiatus from snow, the fire has been reignited and is burning hotter than ever. This is the year to show the world and myself what I can do on a pair of skis. I have been training faster than ever through this season's prep period and for the first time since making the ski team, I am at an age and have the strength to be truly competitive on the World Cup circuit.
Join my team
In order to continue training and competing this season, I need your help to raise $25,000. Any amount you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. Please help me spread the word!
